As one youtube commenter said, “This is one of the most moving scenes in anything I’ve ever seen or read. It really conveys how a lifetime of poverty and violence have made Mugen’s heart rock hard. The song is a brilliant choice. It’s a folk song about a mother selflessly toiling without complaint so her children can have a better life. The compassion in the song contrasts with the absolute lack of compassion in Mugen’s life, but there’s a sense of toil, hardship and iron resolve in both.”
